Throw Me Something, Mister!

Buy Mardi Gras Beads

Mardi Gras Accessories

It doesn’t matter if you are wandering the French Quarter, at a Parade or at any other time, there’s few things that give that “Mardi Gras Feel” than getting (or giving) Mardi Gras Beads!

Before the days of the Internet you were probably out of luck if you wanted to buy Mardi Gras beads if you weren’t in New Orleans.  Now you can get a huge variety of beads all at your fingertips.

It used to be the only people who would buy Mardi Gras beads were the folks who were in the parades throwing to the crowds.  Now you do not have to be content with what you can catch at a parade.  And of course now you don’t have to travel to New Orleans to get your hands on some great Mardi Gras beads.

Beads have been thrown during Mardi Gras since the 1800’s.  Back then the beads were made of glass and were quite expensive.  Thanks to modern technology and inexpensive mass production of plastic beads, beads from China are what you will currently find.  Switching to less expensive beads allowed Krewe members to buy a lot more beads to throw to the parade crowds.

In the 1990’s parade goers were getting less and less impressed with the plain, simple plastic Mardi Gras beads and they would leave them in the streets instead of wearing them or taking them home.  To combat this indifference to the beads, many new styles of beads were introduced.  The bigger and more unusual the better.  These beads are sometimes fought over by the crowds.  Many of the Krewes have beads personalized with their logos.  Now strands of beads have the ability to light up or glow in the dark.  Also you can find beads that are in a variety of shapes – anything from rubber duckies, chili peppers, dice, guitars and masks.

If you are trying to think of good Mardi Gras costume ideas just know that as long as you add beads you are on the right track.  You could go as simple as some good beads and fun Mardi Gras masks.  Beads complement ANY Mardi Gras costume perfectly.  Even if you don’t think it would really match you just can’t be without beads for Fat Tuesday – or a Mardi Gras theme party.

For those wanting to throw their own Mardi Gras bash beads are one of those multifunctional Mardi Gras party supplies.  You can use beads as part of the entertainment, great games with them, do craft projects (you can make little bead dogs), and use them as decoration as well as the perfect Mardi Gras accessory.

Since Mardi Gras beads come in colors other than the traditional Carnival colors of gold, purple and green, you can incorporate these beads year round.  Red and green beads are great for decorating at Christmas time, as are silver and blue beads.

Frankly, it seems sad that people only seem to wear Mardi Gras beads just during this one time of year.  They’re a lot of fun to wear and can be great conversation starters.  And some of the nicer ones actually can pass as decent costume jewelry for women.  But if you ever find yourself a little down in the dumps, breaking out a funky strand of Mardi Gras beads is a sure fire way to lift your spirits – no matter what month it is.  Whenever you want to let the good times roll, then you should buy Mardi Gras beads – or bring out the ones you already have.  To make sure you have them on hand whenever you need them – try hanging a few strands from the rearview mirror of your car (be sure to not block your view).  This gives a fun festive decorative look for your car and you’ll be sure to have some beads ready for a party or for any occasion that could use an infusion of Mardi Gras cheer.
